The best things to do in Barcelona

Sagrada Família, Park Güell, Casa Batlló, a Gothic Quarter walk and the Montjuïc cable car. Here is what to book and what is free, with honest advice on what is worth the price, what you can cancel and which sights are partly closed.

The Sagrada Família rising above the rooftops of Barcelona, with green hills behind
Short answer

The best things to do in Barcelona are Sagrada Família, Park Güell, Casa Batlló and a walk through the Gothic Quarter. Book the first three ahead, because entry is timed and Park Güell can sell out for the day. The Gothic Quarter and most of Park Güell’s grounds cost nothing.

The 8 tours and tickets we would book

The first four have free cancellation. The last four are non-refundable, so book those once your dates are sure.

Our top 10

Top 10 things to do and see in Barcelona

The big sights first. Each one shows what it costs and, where it helps, the tour or ticket we would book.

The tourist things that are worth it

Yes, the big tourist sights are worth it on a first visit. The Gaudí buildings are like nothing else. The Gothic Quarter and most of Park Güell cost nothing, so they are worth it too.

  1. The towers of the Sagrada Família with building cranes above them

    Sagrada Família

Gaudí’s great church is the top sight in town. The official ticket costs €26 with an audio guide app. Shorts and skirts must reach mid-thigh, and hats come off inside.

Our pick: Sagrada Família entry with audio guide, from €34 per person

  2. The mosaic stairway and stone arches at the entrance of Park Güell

    Park Güell

Only a small part of the park needs a ticket, and the rest is free. The ticket costs €18, with time slots from 9:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Works on the drains affect visits right now.

Our pick: Park Güell guided tour with skip-the-line entry, from €25 per person

  3. The wavy front of Casa Batlló with its mask-shaped balconies and tiled walls

    Casa Batlló

Gaudí’s house on Passeig de Gràcia is open from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. A visit takes about 1 hour 15 minutes. Kids up to 12 get in free.

Our pick: Casa Batlló entry with audio guide, from €29 per person

  4. The helmet-shaped chimneys on the roof of La Pedrera against a blue sky

    La Pedrera

Gaudí’s stone apartment house has a roof full of odd chimneys. The Essential ticket starts at €29. A sunset visit costs from €25 until 1 November.

    Official tickets from €29.

  5. A carved stone bridge over a narrow lane in the Gothic Quarter

    The Gothic Quarter on foot

The old town’s narrow lanes are free to walk at any time. A guided walk adds the stories behind the old stones.

    Free on your own.

  6. Montjuic cable car gondolas above pine trees with Barcelona and the Sagrada Familia below

    The Montjuïc cable car

Small cabins carry you up the hill of Montjuïc to the castle. It was reported back in normal service on 13 April 2026, after sewer works.

Our pick: Montjuïc cable car return ticket, from €19 as listed

  7. Watchtower on the stone terrace of Montjuic Castle under a blue sky

    Montjuïc Castle

The old fort sits on top of Montjuïc. Entry is reported at €12. It is reported free on Sunday afternoons from 3 p.m. and for kids under 16.

Reported €12, free on Sunday afternoons.

  8. Strings of red and yellow peppers hanging over a stall at La Boqueria

    La Boqueria market

The big food market is reported open Monday to Saturday, from about 8 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. It is reported closed on Sunday.

Free to walk in. Closed Sundays (reported).

  9. The empty red and blue seats of the Barcelona football stadium, seen through a window

    The FC Barcelona museum

Football fans get the club museum and 360° films. The stadium visit is not part of the ticket we picked, because of the renovation. You see the works from a viewpoint.

Our pick: FC Barcelona museum: Barça Immersive Tour, from €30 per person

  10. The Montserrat monastery below its tall, rounded rock peaks

    A day at Montserrat

Trains to Montserrat leave Plaça Espanya every hour from 8:26 a.m. Then a rack railway climbs the mountain in 15 minutes.

Train from Plaça Espanya, then a 15-minute rack railway.

Fun and cool things to do in Barcelona

For fun, ride the cable car up Montjuïc, see Casa Batlló at night or catch the Magic Fountain.

The cable car runs in small cabins from Montjuïc Park up to the castle. On the way down you can stop at the Mirador de l’Alcalde viewpoint.

Casa Batlló has a night visit from €25, sold online only, until 15 November. Entry is between 8:30 and 9:30 p.m. It comes with an audio guide and a glass of cava, but not the rooftop.

The Magic Fountain on Montjuïc is reported to run Thursday to Saturday evenings in October, from 9 to 10 p.m. No November dates were out when we checked.

Good things to do in Barcelona for free or cheap

Many good things in Barcelona cost little or nothing.

To get around, a T-casual card costs €13 for 10 rides in zone 1.

For art, the Articket BCN pass costs €38 for six art museums, with the Picasso Museum and the Miró Foundation. It is good for one year.

Nice things to do in Barcelona that cost nothing

These cost nothing at all:

  • Most of Park Güell. Only a small part is the paid area; the rest is open green space.
  • The lanes of the Gothic Quarter, at any time of day.
  • Montjuïc Castle on Sunday afternoons from 3 p.m., as reported. Kids under 16 are reported to get in free.

Booking tips

  1. Book the timed sights first

Park Güell’s own site shows “sold out for today” notices. Book it, Sagrada Família and Casa Batlló before you travel. At Park Güell you can go in up to 30 minutes after your slot starts.

  2. If your plans change

Four of our picks are non-refundable: Casa Batlló, both Park Güell entry tickets and the FC Barcelona museum. The other four have free cancellation. Book the non-refundable ones last.

  3. Before you go: what’s closed

Works on the drains at Park Güell affect visits right now. The Greek Theatre and the Hypostyle Room are partly closed, says the ticket listing. The FC Barcelona museum ticket leaves out the stadium during its renovation.

  4. Dress code at Sagrada Família

No see-through clothes, swimwear or bare feet. Shorts and skirts must reach at least mid-thigh. Hats come off inside, unless you wear one for religious or health reasons.
